Bible Resource: Bible readings for Dads and Teens

Taking the lead in reading the Bible with your kids is tough – especially when they become teenagers. On the one hand, they’ve got questions that might be tough to answer. On the other hand, they’re so easily bored. If your experience is anything like mine, it’s easy to just give up trying.

The following daily notes were written for my youngest daughter, who has just turned 18.  Our history of reading the bible together was pretty ordinary. Well… worse than that, as a dad I’d been pathetic. Susie was gracious enough to let me try again. I’d write a few days of simple notes at a time (using all the skills and experience and knowledge I could muster), and we’d work through them just before dinner. Or just after dinner. Or sometimes, when she got back from the movies at midnight. We made it a date, and we didn’t miss a night as we doggedly worked our way through the first five books of the Bible. Here’s the result.

At first we covered chapters at a time. By the end, we were looking in more detail. The daily readings aren’t long and drawn out – sometimes just a key verse or two. My goal was to cover the key idea of each section or chapter, and where-ever possible to link forward to Jesus and the gospel.

You’ll notice there’s nothing fancy about this stuff. No pictures, no cool application points with movie stars or song lyrics. Just simple notes that might help you and your kids explore the Bible together day by day.  All you have to do is print a few pages at a time and work through with your teens. Keep it moving fast, with the aim of getting through in five minutes.

300 Men For Jesus

300 Men Manifesto

Acknowledging our own past failures, we, the undersigned 300 men, challenge the men of our city to join us in getting serious about following Jesus. We confess we have often worshipped a convenient Jesus who has allowed us to continue unchallenged in our comfortable lives. We have made an idol for ourselves - a small, easy Jesus.
